If you worked in places where there was asbestos in the air, or if you lived with someone who worked with airborne asbestos, you were most likely exposed to asbestos. Not all asbestos exposure results in mesothelioma, the cancer of the mesothelium (the protective sac that lines your internal organs), and it takes large amounts of asbestos exposure to develop asbestosis.
But it is important to be aware of the symptoms of mesothelioma, especially if you were exposed to asbestos years ago. This is when most mesothelioma sufferers were exposed to asbestos, because it was a popular product, and its carcinogenic properties were not yet known to the public.
Common symptoms of mesothelioma include
Persistent cough: Coughing fits are a reflex action. They are the body?s attempt to clear irritated lungs of the asbestos fibers lodged within.Hemoptysis: this is the medical term for coughing up blood. It is sometimes accompanied by difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), as well as hoarseness.Chest pain: dull aches in the chest are due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleura, which is the lining around the lungs. A common symptom of pleural mesothelioma.Shortness of breath: the first symptom typically observed in mesothelioma symptoms. 90% of mesothelioma patients report experiencing shortness of breath, along with a heavy sensation in the chest.Weight loss: Weight loss is a symptom in about a third of all pleural mesothelioma cases in the United States.Horner?s Syndrome: A person with Horner?s Syndrome appears to have eyeballs that sink in their sockets, droopy eyelids, abnormal pupil constriction and the inability to sweat.
Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease, comprising approximately 75 % of all mesothelioma diagnoses in America. The right lung is affected about 60% of the time, and about 5% of patients show evidence of mesothelioma cancer cells in both lungs at the time of diagnosis.
Other forms of mesothelioma have their own symptoms. For example, pericardial mesothelioma will result in heart pains, as it is the cancer of the mesothelium around the heart, and peritoneal mesothelioma results in fluid retention in the abdomen, so those affected by this cancer notice swelling of the abdomen often accompanied by weight loss.
About a quarter of mesothelioma patients show symptoms for at least six months before they are diagnosed. In some cases, there may be no early symptoms experienced at all. Whatever your experiences with mesothelioma symptoms, please be safe, be vigilant, and be well.
