BRANSON, Mo. -- Our new Hometown Heroes segment features folks in our community who commit remarkable acts, overcome tremendous odds, or give back to others.
This week, we're sharing Marti Fitzgerald's story.
Marti survived the
"I lost everything," she recalls.
Marti tried to hold onto everything she had -- even Robert's hand -- as tightly as she could.
"About that time we were airborne," she says. "I hollered and I hollered and I screamed and screamed and I never heard him."
Robert was gone and Marti's nightmare was far from over. She was trapped under debris and was eventually pulled from the rubble. Her spine was fractured and she thought she'd never walk again.

"The ER staff was just amazing," she says. They pushed and pushed her when she didn't think she could go any further. "All the people, they were so nice. They were family. They still are family."
When Marti was taken to Skaggs Acute Rehab Unit, she couldn't walk or stand. She needed them, but in turn, they needed her.
"She inspired us," says Becky Cook, Unit Director. "She inspired the other patients that were here. You know, she says we did all the work for her, but really it the other way around because she definitely really changed us."
Marti continues to heal physically and emotionally. She's a nurse and is now volunteering at Skaggs to give back to those who helped her and to those who need her.
"She's super at her job," says patient Mary Miller. "She's very kind and patient and that's what you need in this."
As their slogan goes, "You believe it together, we can achieve it as a team." That's what they do.
If Robert can see her today, "He would probably be surprised in some respects, but probably would be, 'Yeah, I knew you'd be all right," says Marti.
