Non-Profit Management Class Plans Concert, Silent Auction for ...

by Kristen Crummett, guest writer

On Friday, December 14, The White Horse in Black Mountain will host a concert and silent auction benefitting the local charter school Art Space and its Visiting Artists Program.

Art Space is a tuition-free public school serving children from kindergarten through eighth grade and features an arts-integrated curriculum. The Visiting Artists Program brings professional artists such as actors, dancers, musicians, and visual artists into the classroom to share their skills with students. This innovative approach to education has been proven to not only enrich the lives of the children, but to provide a competitive advantage as well, with test scores ranking in the ninetieth percentile.

Warren Wilson College students in Heather Lacey?s Seminar in Non-Profit Management class began planning the event as part of what started as a class project, but depending on the success of the event, now has potential to grow into a legitimate, fully functioning non-profit organization focused on strengthening local community ties by bringing together businesses and organizations for the benefit of other area non-profits. The businesses receive promotion and recognition while the chosen beneficiary non-profit receives funding to continue their programs.

The benefit concert will begin at 6 p.m. and will feature performances from the Warren Wilson College Bluegrass Band, Phil Jamison and the Warren Wilson Old-Time String Band, Big Ben and the Clock Towers, and The Cody Wright Band, with plenty of room and opportunity for dancing. Ticket purchases cost $10 in advance through the White Horse website and $15 at the door. The silent auction will be held throughout the evening featuring products made from local artists as well as various Warren Wilson College student crews such as fine woodworking, ceramics, and blacksmithing, to name just a few. The Flying Falafel Brothers will provide food for sale in front of the venue with a percentage of their sales benefitting Art Space.

Any individual or business interested in getting involved either through donations, matching, services, promotional partnerships, or other means may contact student Elias Hinderberger at ehinderberger@warren-wilson.edu. All monetary donations should be made out to Art Space and are eligible for tax deduction.
