Northland College Organizes Locally-Grown Food Buying

ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) - Schools and hospitals in the Ashland area are being asked to join a program that increases the amount of produce they buy from local producers.

Organizers expect it will provide a financial boost for small farmers. Eileen McCutcheon and her husband operate a 105-acre organic farm in Mason. McCutcheon says it's been "an excruciating recession" for Angel Acres.

Northland College organized the program, which has a goal of buying 10 percent of produce locally this year, 25 percent next year and an ultimate target of 80 percent local.

Wisconsin Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/I1gLQA ) says Northland College hopes to get Ashland Memorial Hospital on board, as well as area public schools.
