KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A firefight broke out between U.S. forces and their Afghan army allies in eastern Afghanistan Sunday, killing two Americans and three Afghan soldiers and pushing the number of U.S. troops killed in the long-running war 2,000.
The fighting started Saturday when what is believed to have been a mortar fired by insurgents struck a checkpoint set up by U.S. forces in Wardak province, said Shahidullah Shahid, a provincial government spokesman. He said the Americans thought they were under attack from a nearby Afghan army checkpoint and fired on it, prompting the Afghan soldiers to return fire.
The Afghan Defense Ministry said the gunbattle was the result of a "misunderstanding" between international forces and Afghan soldiers manning a checkpoint in the Sayd Abad district.
NATO's International Security Assistance Force, commonly referred to as ISAF, provided a different account.
"After a short conversation took place between (Afghan army) and ISAF personnel firing occurred which resulted in the fatal wounding of an ISAF soldier and the death of his civilian colleague," the coalition said in a statement. It said the three Afghan soldiers died "in an ensuing exchange of fire."
NATO did not say whether it considered this an "insider" attack on foreign forces by Afghan allies.
There has been rising tide of such attacks in which Afghan soldiers or police assault their international allies. The killings pose one of the greatest threats to NATO's mission in the country, endangering a partnership key to training up Afghan security forces and withdrawing international troops.
While it may be days before it becomes clear who fired on whom first, the incident illustrates how tense relations have become between international troops and their Afghan allies.
Officials on both sides went into damage control mode, arguing that Saturday's violence did not mark a new low in Afghan-U.S. relations and urging patience while investigators tried to figure out exactly what had happened.
The deputy commander of NATO's military force in Afghanistan, British Lt. Gen. Adrian Bradshaw, called a last-minute news conference in Kabul to address the incident, even though he had few details to give.
He said the initial report of an insider attack should be amended to note that the incident "is now understood possibly to have involved insurgent fire," and tried to stress that relations between international troops and their Afghan allies "are very strong and very effective."
A spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, Gen. Zahir Azimi, also sought to downplay the incident.
"In a misunderstanding shooting broke out between Afghan army and ISAF forces. As a result of the shooting, three army soldiers were killed, three other soldiers were wounded and number of ISAF forces were killed and wounded," Azimi said in a statement.
One U.S. official confirmed that the service member killed was American, while another confirmed that the civilian was also American. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the nationality of the dead had not yet been formally announced.
The number of American military dead reflects an Associated Press count of those members of the armed services killed inside Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion on Oct. 7, 2001.
In the south meanwhile, three Afghan police officers were killed when insurgents attacked a checkpoint in Helmand province Sunday morning, provincial police spokesman Fareed Ahmad said.

Google's new Field Trip app is a virtual local tour guide that's always running in the background. It pops up interesting local information???from local history and architecture to the best restaurants and shopping???without you having to ask for it.
After you choose whether you want just occasional notifications or frequent ones, Field Trip runs quietly in the background, looking for anything notable around you. The app pulls in information from a ton of sources, including Zagat and Eater in the food and drinks category; Architizer for architecture; and The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations and Atlas Obscura for unique (and possibly bizarre) finds.
When it finds something, Field Trip notifies you with a ringtone and/or vibration. It can even read the title and description to you. View the event, place, or thing on a map and read more about it within the app. You can also choose to get more or fewer notifications from individual sources.
The Android?app has a really pleasant interface and definitely encourages you to step out and go explore (as the video above suggests). Google says the app is like having a local friend with you as you explore a city. You can download this virtual friend on Google Play now; an iOS version is coming soon.?
NOTE:?If Google Play?says?your phone is incompatible, it might not really be. I got the incompatibility warning too on my Galaxy S2, but was able to download it directly from the phone and it works!

TIP! Once you have decided that bankruptcy is your only option, research the bankruptcy laws for your state and familiarize yourself with the whole process. Your financial future is at stake, so arming yourself with knowledge and staying proactive by engaging in the process with your attorney, helps ensure a more favorable outcome and better protects your financial future.
Although it is sometimes needed, deciding to file for bankruptcy is hard. It?s best to make the decision of filing for personal bankruptcy after doing a little research and gaining a clear understanding of the topic. Read the below article for excellent advice from people who have personally went through bankruptcy.
TIP! Be mindful of new debt after bankruptcy has been filed for. A lot of lenders will give you loans that are geared in helping people that are trying to start fresh after bankruptcy.
If you need to file for bankruptcy, do not put it off. Once you decide that filing for bankruptcy is the option you must choose, file immediately. Waiting will only worsen your finances and subject you to even more stress. You will feel the negative effects in the rest of your life. The earlier you file, the better it is for you.
TIP! Before filing for bankruptcy, be sure to choose the kind of bankruptcy that is best for your personal financial situation. There are many different types of bankruptcy.
Bankruptcy laws are very exact and very important, so ensure that you?re well aware of all current laws before you file a petition. For instance, you need to know not to shift assets into someone else?s name in the year leading up to your filing. In addition, it?s unlawful for a filer to acquire more debt on their credit cards before they file.
TIP! Some lawyers offer a free phone line so creditors may be referred there when they make attempts to contact you about your delinquent accounts. You can just give them the number and they can call for confirmation that your debt is indeed part of a bankruptcy.
It is important that you do not transfer assets of any kind to another individual within one year of filing for bankruptcy. Why shouldn?t you transfer assets? It?s because this looks as if you?re attempting to hide your money so that you can wiggle out of debt. Certain assets are untouchable by creditors. In any case, this sort of asset hiding is not allowed, so you might need to delay filing if you?ve transferred any assets recently.
TIP! You should never lie when filing for bankruptcy. If you hide something, or neglect to add all of your information you could be denied.
If you aren?t totally honest about your assets when filing a bankruptcy petition, you could get into serious trouble. The lawyer representing you when you file needs to have full knowledge of your financial situation. Never hide anything, and make sure you come up with a well devised plan for dealing with bankruptcy.
TIP! Gain a clear understanding of the circumstances that put you in a position to file for personal bankruptcy. Bills for unexpected medical issues are one issue, but spending for no reason is another.
Make sure to list all of the debts you are responsible for when you retain a lawyer to handle your bankruptcy case. You need to inform your attorney about all your debts, both public and private.
TIP! If possible obtain a personal recommendation for a bankruptcy lawyer instead of randomly choosing one. Some companies just want to take advantage of you, so it is important that you have help from someone you trust.
A lot of people who file for bankruptcy swear they will never use credit of any kind ever again. Since using credit responsibly is the only way to improve your credit score, this is not such a good idea. If you never work on rebuilding your credit after a bankruptcy, you may not be able to qualify for a car loan or mortgage. Begin to go down the right path by obtaining a single card.
TIP! If you are considering bankruptcy, do not leave it until the last possible moment to do so. Do not avoid your creditors; they will not go away.
Do not hesitate to remind your lawyer of any details regarding your case. Don?t assume that they?ll remember something important later without having a reminder. Speak up. This is your life, and your future depends on it.
TIP! Keep working to improve your situation. Certain property cannot be repossessed while you are in the process of filing for bankruptcy so be sure to learn about the laws in your state.
If you are going to file for bankruptcy make sure you are prompt. What a lot of people do is ignore the fact that they are in a financial crisis and think that their debt is not going to catch up to them. It is easy you to lose control of your debt, and avoiding the problem will make things worse. As soon as you know that you are too far over your head, make the move to call an attorney skilled in bankruptcy court, to weigh your options.
TIP! When bankruptcy seem inevitable it is important not to use your retirement funds or emergency savings to pay creditors. You should never touch your retirement accounts, unless you have absolutely no choice.
Nobody wishes to file for bankruptcy, but there are cases where it is simply necessary. Now that you have read this article, you have been exposed to some ideas, insights and advice from those who have gone down this road before. If you take time out to learn from the experiences of others, your journey with bankruptcy won?t be so stressful

The answer is definitely YES! In fact, disk formatting doesn't erase the files (until they are overwritten by other files). When you format your Mac hard drive or store device, the file system of disk is replaced with a new empty file system, thus, the entries of all the files and directories stored on the disk are erased and they become inaccessible. But hard drive maintains an index file, which tells the operating system where a particular file is stored. When you format the hard drive, links between index and file are deleted. The file remains physically intact. You can restore formatted files from hard drive as long as the original files are not overwritten by other files.
Since it is possible to recover formatted hard drive, how to get back deleted data, such as the media data, has really confused some Mac users. In brief, there are two ways: Restore and Recover.
If you have backed up your files, you can easily restore formatted files from your backup files.
If there is no valid backup, you need computer format recovery software - uFlysoft Photo Recovery for Mac, to recover formatted media data from computer hard drive. uFlysoft Photo Recovery for Mac enables you to do it, no matter formatted, deleted or lost files due to different reasons.
Media data loss happen to us sometimes, expect formatted hard drive, there are some other reasons can cause media data loss, let's check them out first. According to our experience, the primary threats to your media data include:
1. Hardware or System Problems
2. Human Error
3. Software Corruption or Program Problems
4. Viruses infection
5. Natural Disasters
Including accidently formatting, these six major threats are the common reasons. But fortunately, those data which are lost are recoverable. All you need is to have a try on the all-in-one photo recovery software we mention above.
Once you choose the data recovery tool we mention above, all you need to do is to follow the easy-to-use "3-step" operation below.
First of all, install the application on your computer. (Worry about the fee? No need to do so. uFlysoft Photo Recovery for Mac is free download/free scan application.)
Secondly, start scanning where the lost media data were stored before after launching the program.
The last but not least, after scanning finished, click "Recover" and choose the path where you want to store the lost data.
All of these just cost you a few minutes, after that you will be able to get back deleted data successfully.
1. Do not store the recovered data in the path where you lost them before or you will not be able to get them back again.
2. If you are a Windows OS user, use uFlysoft Photo Recovery for Win to get back your lost media data with ease.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? A common herbicide used in the United States may be linked to an increased risk of a congenital abnormality of the nasal cavity known as choanal atresia, say researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and other Texas institutions.
The study by Dr. Philip Lupo, assistant professor of pediatrics -- hematology/oncology at BCM and Texas Children's Cancer Center, is scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics.
Affects ability to breathe
Choanal atresia is a disorder where the back of the nasal passage is blocked by tissue formed during fetal development. It is a rare condition but can be serious because it affects a baby's ability to breathe. It is typically treated through surgery.
Very few risk factors for choanal atresia have been identified, however chemicals that disrupt the maternal endocrine system may be associated with risk, according to Lupo. The study focused on atrazine, which is the most commonly used herbicide in the United States -- especially in corn crops -- and is believed to be an endocrine disrupter.
"Endocrine disrupters aren't fully understood, but it is believed they interfere with or mimic certain hormones, thereby blocking their proper function and potentially leading to adverse outcomes," Lupo said.
Discovering origin of birth defect
The study found that mothers who lived in Texas counties with the highest levels of estimated atrazine application were 80 percent more likely to have children with choanal atresia or stenosis compared to women who lived in the counties with the lowest levels. Choanal stenosis is a less severe form of the condition.
Data for the study was collected from the Texas Birth Defects Registry.
"Our results warrant more detailed exploration before any public health or policy-related recommendations are made," Lupo said, "but this study is a good first step in trying to understand the origin of this birth defect, including a possible role of atrazine."
The study was funded in part by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded Texas Center for Birth Defects Research and Prevention through a cooperative agreement with Texas Department of State Health Services as well as the Title V Office of Texas DSHS. Others involved in the research included A. J. Agopian, Yi Cai, Peter H. Langlois, and Mark A. Canfield.

HOUSTON (Reuters) - One worker was killed in a boiler explosion on Friday at CVR Energy Inc.'s 70,000 barrel per day (bpd) Wynnewood, Oklahoma, refinery, a company spokeswoman said in a statement.
Another refinery employee was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, according to Garvin County Sheriff Larry Rhodes.
There was no fire following the blast, which occurred at about 6:20 p.m. local time (1120 GMT) because the refinery was shut down for a 40-day overhaul, Rhodes said.
"There was no threat to Wynnewood or the surrounding communities," Rhodes said.
Neither the company nor Rhodes gave details about the injuries employees sustained in the blast.
Boilers are required at a refinery to generate steam for electrical power production, and for use in the crude oil refining process.
"All other employees are accounted for at this time," said CVR spokeswoman Angie Dasbach. "Company officials are assessing the situation and will provide updates as information becomes available."
CVR acquired the Wynnewood refinery when it purchased Gary-Williams Energy Corp for $525 million in December.
Wynnewood is located 67 miles south of the state capital of Oklahoma City.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Move forward. High-five your neighbor. Turn around. Repeat.
That's the winning formula of one of the world's smallest predators, the soil bacteria Myxococcus xanthus, and a new study by scientists at Rice University and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School shows how M. xanthus uses the formula to spread, engulf and devour other bacteria.
The study, featured on the cover of this month's online issue of the journal PLOS Computational Biology, shows how the simple motions of individual bacteria are amplified within colonies of M. xanthus to form millions-strong waves moving outward in unison. The findings answer longstanding questions about how the waves form and the competitive edge they provide M. xanthus.
"When the cells at the edge of the colony are moving outward, they are unlikely to encounter another M. xanthus cell, so they keep moving forward," said lead author Oleg Igoshin, assistant professor of bioengineering at Rice. "When they are traveling the other way, back toward the rest of the colony, they are likely to encounter other cells of their kind, and when they pass beside one of these and touch, they get the signal to turn around."
Igoshin said the net effect is that the cells "spend more time moving outward than inward, and as a result, they spread faster."
M. xanthus is an oft-studied model organism in biology but, Igoshin said, it is one of the few well-studied organisms that lends itself to the study of systems biology, a rapidly growing field of life sciences that aims to model and discover emergent phenomena -- like the rippling waves of M. xanthus colonies -- that have a basis in genetics but only become apparent when cells cooperate.
"Most of the model bacteria that biologists selected for study in the lab were chosen because they were very good at growing on their own in a test tube and not sticking to the wall or to one another," Igoshin said. "When we were choosing model organisms, we lost a lot of the social properties that systems biologists like to study. M. xanthus is different in that people chose to study it because it grew into cool patterns and structures arising from cooperative behavior."
As a computational biologist, Igoshin specializes in creating mathematical models that accurately describe the behavior of living systems. Such models are useful for understanding the cellular and even genetic basis of emergent phenomena.
In the case of M. xanthus waves, Igoshin and Rice graduate student Haiyang Zhang and postdoctoral fellow Peng Shi created an agent-based model, a computer program that simulated the actions and interactions of individual cells to examine how they collectively produced M. xanthus waves.
The model showed that just three ingredients were needed to generate the rippling behavior:
To verify the model's accuracy, Igoshin's team partnered with UTHealth's Heidi Kaplan, associate professor of microbiology and molecular genetics. Kaplan and graduate students Zalman Vaksman and Douglas Litwin, both of the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston, used time-lapse images from microscopes to examine the behavior of M. xanthus waves. The experiments confirmed the relationships between wavelength, reversal time and cell velocity that had been predicted by the model.
"We also found an interesting flip side for the behavior, which was counterintuitive and unexpected," Kaplan said. "The same behavior that causes the waves to spread quickly and to cover newly found prey also allows M. xanthus cells to stay on a patch of food and not drift away until the food is devoured."
The exact biochemical signals that the cells use to sense their prey and signal one another to reverse are still a mystery, but the new study helps to narrow the field. For example, many signals between bacteria do not require physical contact, but the study found that the reversing behavior requires contact between cells.
"If the mechanism for this behavior can be found, it could prove useful for synthetic biologists who are interested in programming touch-induced functions into synthetic organisms," Igoshin said.
The research was supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The computer modeling was performed on three NSF-funded Rice supercomputers -- STIC, SUG@R and DAVinCI -- that are jointly managed and operated by Rice's Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology and Rice's Department of Information Technology.

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion Ltd shares jumped on Friday after the embattled BlackBerry maker posted quarterly results that showed it was still able to pull off a surprise as it tackles the formidable task of getting consumers excited over its new smartphone line.
While RIM's performance gave Wall Street a modicum of optimism, analysts stressed RIM has to now prove that the BlackBerry 10 devices, due early next year, can halt its brand's downward spiral. That won't be easy, they said.
"I have to admit they did a very good job making the best out of a really tough situation. You've got to give management some credit for that, but they still need to nurse the company back to health," said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu.
RIM stunned investors on Thursday with stronger-than-expected BlackBerry sales in the quarter ended September 1. It even managed to build up its cash reserves, giving it a fighting chance to market the new BlackBerry 10 line effectively, while ramping up production of the reengineered smartphones.
Investors responded to the rare glimmer of good news for the embattled company by pushing up RIM's downtrodden share price up by more than 8 percent in afternoon trading on Friday.
Until Thursday's results, RIM was being written off by analysts because of its failure to keep pace with innovations from rivals such as Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co.
Analysts said RIM needs to generate enough excitment about the new devices to be able to sell them at a healthy profit.
"The question is, even if they do sell BB10 units, what is the margin profile going to be," said Wu, who notes that RIM once realized gross margins in the mid-40 percent range. Margins are now below 30 percent.
"If the gross margin profile stays where it is, then it is going to be very tough to be profitable, even if they sell a lot of BlackBerry 10 phones," he said.
To be sure, RIM managed to boost average selling prices in its latest quarter compared with the previous three months. That was a positive signal in the lead-up to the BB10 launch in early 2013.
"The bad news is that these results have little or no bearing on what remains true, and that is, RIM still needs to execute on BB10 and do it in a way that draws clear and resonant distinctions between what it has to offer and what the rest of the market has to offer," said CCS Insight analyst John Jackson.
The company is counting on BB10, equipped with a revamped operating system, to arrest a precipitous decline in market share over the past year and longer.
But in the end, the success or failure of the BB10 will hinge by how warmly it's embraced by consumers, many of whom have already switched to high-end devices like Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S III, especially in North America and Europe.
"In the big picture, nobody, not even RIM knows whether this is going to work for them," cautioned Charter Equity Research analyst Ed Snyder.
Test versions of the BB10 have won praise from carriers and developers, but the true test still hinges on RIM's ability to win over fans of touchscreen devices.
"I want to regain market share in the U.S. and I want to win back market share in the full touch segment - that's what the company is geared up to and that's what we are working toward," said RIM Chief Executive Thorsten Heins in an interview with CNBC on Friday.
RIM's second-quarter performance also reminded investors that the company still enjoys a strong franchise in emerging markets, where consumers have graviated to its reliable though outmoded legacy smartphones.
Even though RIM's aging line-up has lost ground in North America and Europe, the BlackBerry maker managed to top shipment and revenue expectations in its second quarter, thanks largely to strong sales of smartphones in countries like India and Indonesia.
"This performance is nothing short of shocking as RIM has found a formula to entice its global carrier customers to sell (its) product," said National Bank Financial's Kris Thompson.
On Friday National Bank Financial upgraded RIM's stock, while BMO Capital Markets and Barclays Capital were among brokerages that raised price targets on the company's shares.
Thompson, who is rated five stars by Thomson Reuters StarMine for the accuracy of his estimates on RIM's earnings, upgraded the stock to "outperform" and increased his price target on the stock to $12 from $8.
Shares of RIM, which rose 20 percent after the closing bell on Thursday, were up 8.5 percent at $7.75 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq on Friday. Its Toronto-listed shares rose more than 9 percent to C$7.57.

Despite recent trends in public opinion polls, Mitt Romney is far from out of the presidential race, if several historic trends break his way.
The release of new polling data this week from two sources showed the incumbent, President Barack Obama, opening up sizable leads in the key swing states of Florida and Ohio.
If accurate, the gap-especially in Ohio?would put Obama and the Democrats within a handful of electoral votes of a win in November.
The consensus Real Clear Politics electoral map now shows President Obama with a projected 265 electoral votes, with Ohio placed in the Obama win column. The winner needs 270 electoral votes.
By that count, seven swing states remain: Colorado, Iowa, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Virginia. Also, RCP has another swing state, Wisconsin, in the Obama column.
But a lot can change in the last six weeks of a presidential campaign. If trends didn?t? shift in an election?s home stretch, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and George Bush would have lost their elections in 1960, 1980 and 2000.
Here?s what has to happen for Mitt Romney to get back in the game ? if he?s even out of it at this point.
Lesson 1: The latest poll numbers aren?t the final election results
Those two polls, from the Washington Post and CBS/New York Times/Quinnipiac, show what has been a four-point swing in Ohio and Florida toward Obama. The average margin of error for those two polls is 3.75 percent. The other recent poll for Ohio, from Gravis Marketing, puts Obama up by one percent.
Also, in 2008 the Quinnipiac poll consistently gave Obama higher numbers in Ohio than other polls.? In late September, Quinnipiac had Obama up by eight points in Ohio, while Rasmussen had McCain with a one-point lead.
The final Quinnipiac 2008 poll in Ohio had with a seven-point lead for Obama; he won the state by 4.6 percent.
The 2008 Quinnipiac poll in Florida had Obama slipping from an eight-point lead in late September to a 2-point margin in late October against McCain. Obama won Florida by 2.6 percent in the election.
So the poll numbers in late September aren?t the final election results, especially in Ohio. In 2004, eight of nine polls in the election?s final week under counted Bush?s win over Kerry in Ohio.
And we won?t get into the 1948 election, which Gallup projected a Thomas Dewey win by four points in the national election. ?Gallup under counted Truman?s votes by 9 percent.
Lesson two: History shows a national vote can swing late in the game
In this week four years ago, Obama had a three-point lead in Gallup?s national polling over his GOP opponent, John McCain, among regular voters. Obama?s lead grew to 11 percent among regular voters by Election Day.
In 2004, George Bush had an 11-point lead over the challenger, John Kerry, in the last week of September among regular voters. By October 10, Gallup had the national race tied at 48 percent for each candidate. Bush rallied to win the election.
In 2000, Al Gore had an 8-point national lead over Bush among regular voters in late September.? That lead slipped to three points by early October. Bush won that election.
Another example of a late election rally was Ronald Reagan?s stretch run against the incumbent, Jimmy Carter, in 1980. Carter had a six-point lead over Reagan late in October as the campaign?s only debate loomed. Reagan made up nine points in the Gallup poll and took it into Election Day on November 4, 1980. Reagan won the popular vote by 8.3 percent on that day.
Lesson three: Debates can be the great election game changer
As we recounted earlier this week, John Kennedy made up six points in the national Gallup poll in 1960 after his first televised debate with Richard Nixon.
Link: How the Kennedy-Nixon debate changed politics forever
And as we explained above, Ronald Reagan made up nine points after winning his debate against Jimmy Carter in 1980.
Those facts haven?t been lost on the Romney camp and the challenger has been using Ohio Senator Rob Portman in his mock debate preparations.
President Obama will spend three days in Nevada preparing for next Wednesday?s debate in Denver. There were reports this week that Obama will spend less time preparing for the debates than Romney, because of his presidential schedule.
And while more people will likely watch the first of three debates, a mistake in any debate can prove costly. Gerald Ford made his ?Eastern European? mistake in the second 1976 debate.
Ford went down three points in the Gallup national poll after the gaffe. However, he also made up six points in the election?s final weeks.
Lesson four: The arithmetic is all about the Electoral College
While the national vote is a big indicator of who wins the general election, you can ask former vice president Al Gore about the importance of the Electoral College.
Gore won the 2000 popular vote by 0.5 percent, but lost the Electoral College by six votes.
The fact is Mitt Romney can win the election, even if he loses Ohio and Virginia. He just needs to take the other seven swing states, including Florida.
If Virginia goes to Romney and if Romney also takes Florida, he has a 13-vote cushion in the Electoral College with 283 votes. Five of the remaining swing states have fewer than 13 votes: Wisconsin (10), Colorado (9), Iowa (6), Nevada (6) and New Hampshire (4).
So in the 2012 version of presidential bingo, Obama could ?double down? on Nevada and Iowa, and still lose to Romney if the GOP can hold Florida, Virginia and North Carolina, and keep the other three swing states.
While Ohio would be a big loss for the Republicans, it?s not nearly as big as Florida. If Obama takes Florida, Romney needs to win all eight swing states, including Ohio, as his only mathematical option.
And as a final footnote, Romney can win the four biggest swing states?Florida, Ohio and North Carolina and Virginia?and lose the Electoral College by two votes.
The GOP needs to wrap up the smaller states?Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and New Hampshire?to have a significant chance of winning.

As I report in the real estate section of The Times, many would-be buyers are deferring purchases of second homes in upstate New York out of concern that hydraulic fracturing might be allowed nearby. For now, no one knows whether Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo?s administration will allow this controversial natural gas drilling process to go forward.
So far, officials in the Cuomo administration have indicated that the drilling might initially be limited to five New York counties above the Pennsylvania state line where the formation known as the Marcellus Shale is thought to be the most productive. But gas industry officials have cautioned that the extent of the gas deposits will be unknown until they start to drill. The Marcellus Shale spans more than two dozen New York counties, from Chautauqua and Erie in the west to Green and Albany in the east.
While many New Yorkers worry that the drilling could result in groundwater contamination or mar the beauty of the landscape, some are actually hoping that drilling will come to their areas along with jobs and royalties paid for leased land.
The uncertainty is affecting both sales and relationships in the real estate market. Many buyers who are concerned about the environmental risks of the drilling complain that some real estate agents skirt the issue.
Annie M. Van Assche, 62, a computer trainer who lives in Astoria, Queens and has been hunting for a property in the Catskills?where she could raise alpacas and grow organic produce, said she resented that lack of candor. ?I?d ask, ?What?s the situation with fracking up here?? ? she said, an agent might typically reply, ?I haven?t been following it.?
Ms. Van Assche is now considering expanding her search to Maine and Vermont.
John Pratt, an opponent of fracking who lives in central Sullivan County and is treasurer of the county board of realtors, said he was candid with clients and that he would make sure they were aware of the issue before closing a deal. ?I tell my clients that I am against fracking and a proponent of alternative energy solutions,? he said.
But Mr. Pratt said he generally sold in areas that are unlikely to see drilling. ?I focus on selling in areas not currently being leased to gas companies, and I also sell in the area of the Neversink Reservoir, where I think we can safely say fracking will not be taking place anytime soon,? he said.
State officials have said they will not allow fracking in the watershed that supplies drinking water to New York City and Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties downstate.
Yet Mr. Pratt conceded that nothing is set in stone until the state issues its decision. ?I think I?m in denial,? he said. ?It seems like fracking is an issue on the western side of the county, but eventually the industry can come to where I am.?

Many small business leaders are aware that to best reach the maximum number of consumers possible, they need to take a multi-pronged approach. Commercials, billboards and word of mouth marketing are all very important, but arguably the most lucrative method nowadays is via social media platforms.
Using sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest, among many others, is a good way to keep up with what interests customers, as well as keeping tabs on their reactions to the sorts of stories companies post. This can be a fast and easy way to see what products and strategies are working, and which should be revamped. However, other than just marketing, successful businesses are finding that social media sites also provide good gateways to aid with customer service.
However, not many small companies, even those who already have a profitable presence, are taking advantage of best practices that revolve around customer satisfaction. With a few simple steps, owners can implement strategies that allow advertisers to both market merchandise successfully and handle customer service inquiries over social networking websites, allowing businesses to give consumers the best experiences possible.
Few focus on customer service
According to the recent American Express Canada annual Global Customer Service Barometer, some customers prefer speaking with company representatives over other means. In the United States, 7 percent of all consumers would rather speak to employees via wall posts, tweets or a similar method. However, the most highly preferred method remains sending an inquiry on the company's website.
The problem is, only 17 percent of American businesses have optimized their platform presences to attempt to reach out to patrons to heighten customer service. This differs greatly from the 54 percent of companies that do so in India and the 45 percent that take this route in Mexico.
This oversight is generally bad, as many consumers take to social media to share their experiences. Nearly one quarter of American consumers have left a comment on a networking platform about the sort of service they received at businesses. Canadians follow closely behind with 20 percent. However, 29 percent of those in India claim the same.
Show your human side
When either marketing or attempting to tackle customer service needs, one of the most important things to remember is to act like a human being. Marketers tend to identify themselves on behalf of the company itself, so patrons have no idea who they're speaking with, or if they're just receiving an automated computer response.
"The easiest way to remedy the dismal feeling that consumers have when they believe they might be dealing with a computerized answering service is to simply sign their names," explained Erika Kerekes, senior product manager of social media solutions at DeluxeSocial. "Using the first person when responding to comments, relating a personal experience or just singing each post with your real name does wonders to comfort patrons and keep them coming back."
Answering posts from customers that have problems can also go a long way to showing other patrons that frequent a company's social media page that they truly care about their fans.
When to ignore
That said, not every post needs to be acknowledged. According to a Dell infographic, though nearly every single comment warrants a response, some unfavorable ones do not. The news provider said if the post is not positive, aggressive nor misguided and does not detail any unresolved issue, the message should simply be left alone. All others, positive or negative, however, should result in some sort of action on the part of the company, whether it is to try to attempt to help the individual, apologize or thank them.
Even if the wronged patron is aggressive, one of the most important things to remember is to stay positive at all times ? Dell explained beginning flame wars is very bad for the reputations of companies. This can irreparably harm their reputations, so monitoring only is a good idea in certain situations.

Shepard Smith was in the midst of narrating one of his famous car chases.
However it appeared to end in tragedy, as the suspect ran out of his car and shot himself in the head on the middle of a field.
After a quick break, the network cut back to Shep Smith, who was stunned and apologized for not cutting away sooner.
He explained that there was a problem with the delay.
"We really messed up."
Lots more to come, including video of Shep's stunning apology.
If you must see what happened, Mediaite has posted the video.

West Virginia is ready to start a new era, with what is primed to be a classic Big 12 scoring spree, and Urban Meyer will coach a Big Ten game for Ohio State for the first time.
Florida State, meanwhile, is on letdown alert.
The ninth-ranked Mountaineers host one of the two games this weekend matching ranked teams. No. 25 Baylor comes to Morgantown, W.Va., for West Virginia's first Big 12 game.
The Mountaineers fled the Big East last year, paying the conference $20 million for an early release so they could play in the Big 12 this year.
The timing was excellent because West Virginia (3-0) brings a team capable of contending for a Big 12 title into its new neighborhood. Heisman Trophy contender Geno Smith is piling up huge passing stats (1,072 yards and 12 touchdowns) and leading an offense that is averaging 47 points ? or four less points than what Baylor (3-0) is averaging.
Nick Florence has proved to be a more-than-capable replacement for Heisman winner Robert Griffin III. He has passed for 1,004 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The other ranked matchup is unlikely to be as much fun.
No. 14 Ohio State visits No. 20 Michigan State as the Big Ten begins conference play after a rather uninspiring four weeks of nonconference games.
Meyer's first Buckeyes team is saddled with NCAA sanctions, so it can't go to a bowl game or play for the Big Ten championship. But Ohio State could still end up being the best team in the conference.
"I think by the end of the year this might be a hell of a football team," Meyer said. "I mean, it might be sooner than that."
To be that, Ohio State needs to work on its defense. The Buckeyes are last in the conference, allowing 395 yards per game. Ohio State features two of the best defensive linemen in the country in Johnathan Hankins and John Simon. Tying up blockers isn't the problem. Wrapping up ball carriers has been.
That could be an issue when facing Le'Veon Bell, the Spartans' 245-pound tailback who is third in the nation in rushing at 152 yards per game.
Michigan State can win the Big 12 title, but will need to fix an offense that has struggled to find a complement for Bell in the passing game.
All of the top six teams in the nation are big favorites this week, but it might be worth keeping an eye on No. 4 Florida State. The Seminoles are on the road for the first time this season, facing South Florida in a nonconference game.
Coming off last week's 49-37 victory against Clemson, Florida State has to avoid a letdown against a Bulls team that has talent but is hard to figure. USF lost at Ball State last week. One thing is for sure, the Bulls can make their season by beating Florida State.

While all the talk of late is about Cupertino's newfangled Maps application, Nokia's currently keeping busy by doing some behind-the-scenes legwork, including signing new deals with car and navigation system manufacturers. Most recently, the Finnish company announced it's partnering with BMW to power the "next-generation" navigation system in the upcoming 7-series, which will bring features like Enhanced 3D City Models and an Eco Pro Route that chooses the most fuel-efficient way to get you to your destination. In addition to the BMW alliance, though, Nokia has also teamed up with Garmin to bring Transit and Pedestrian maps in the form of an Urban Guidance feature that will be available on iOS and Android devices. For those interested in learning more, the pressers below will fill you in on all the nitty-gritty.

It starts with peas. As kids, we nervously push them around our plates, waiting for an opportunity to slip them quietly to the dog. Something that tastes so bad must be out to kill us, we reason. The same goes for all vegetables, we think.
But over time, our skepticism wears off. We learn that vegetables (and fruits) can help us stay slim and healthy. We overcome our fear, and start seeking out green beans, broccoli, spinach, and romaine. This is a good thing. Numerous studies have shown that increased produce intake can decrease our risk for diabetes and heart disease. And in a large 2011 study, eating lots of fruits and vegetables was found to be one of the strongest predictors of successful weight control.
This doesn't completely erase the lesson we learned as toddlers, though. Some produce is still evil?that which today's restaurants use as a delivery system for low-cost fats and sugars. With the number of absurd toppings now routinely tossed into salads, it?s not uncommon to find more than 1,000 calories buried in a plate of lettuce. These dastardly salads can be hard to identify, which is why I?ve picked out the seven worst America has to offer, compliments of the new and completely updated Eat This, Not That! 2013 Edition. Honestly, I wouldn't even feed them to my beloved pooch.
Friendly?s Kickin? Buffalo Chicken Salad
1,180 calories
95 g fat (19 g saturated)
2,090 mg sodium
Don?t be fooled by the lettuce?it?s simply a foil for the hunks of deep-fried meat, oily wing sauce, cheese, and cream-based blue cheese dressing. This salad is, in fact, more damaging than the hot wings that inspired it. (It has 66 percent more calories than a full order of Applebee's wings!) Instead, opt for the tuna melt and salad combo, the sole menu option to keep both calories and sodium in check.

?Baja Fresh Steak Tostada Salad
1,230 calories
63 g fat (17 g saturated, 2 g trans)
2,380 mg sodium
Props to Baja Fresh for introducing lower-calorie entr?es like Bare Burritos and Baja Ensaladas, but that doesn?t excuse the more nefarious offerings like the 2,000-calorie nachos and this fat-drenched salad that comes served in a deep-fried tortilla receptacle. Don?t let the novelty suck you in. There?s still nothing better than the Original Baja Tacos paired with a side of fiber-rich beans.

?Outback Steakhouse Aussie Crispy Chicken Cobb Salad with Honey Mustard

98 g fat (32 g saturated, 2.2 g trans)
2,096 mg sodium
Cobb might as well stand for ?Corrupted by Oil, Bread & Bacon.? These iconic salads? toppings include croutons, cheese, bacon, and an oft-fried protein, and they tend to be topped with heavier dressings. In the case of Outback, this salad contains more fat than 64 ounces?that?s four pounds?of the chain?s Victoria Filet. The Shrimp Caesar is the lightest salad on the menu, and it comes with 25 grams of lean protein.

Applebee?s Pecan-Crusted Chicken Salad

2,640 mg sodium
Nuts can be a great salad topping, but because they?re calorie-dense, they should be applied judiciously. Applebee?s does not adhere to this advice. With this salad, the chain adds both crushed nuts and sugar-coated pecans. In addition, it adds deep-fried chicken and fat-heavy bleu cheese dressing. The total damage is more than a full day?s recommended fat intake and 117 grams of carbohydrates. You?d have to be nuts to eat that.

California Pizza Kitchen Moroccan Chicken Salad (full)
1,370 calories
12 g saturated fat
1,040 mg sodium
At 116 grams, this salad has more carbohydrates than most of the pasta dishes on the menu. Then there?s the saturated fat. With the exception of the Sicilian or the Meat Cravers, you could eat half of any thin crust pizza on the menu and take in the same amount or less. Try the new Quinoa and Arugula Salad instead. Despite being a seed, quinoa supplies the same amino acids as meat, making it an excellent vegetarian source of protein.

111 g fat (30 g saturated, 2 g trans)
2,400 mg sodium
This is the improved version. IHOP?s previous effort at this same salad had 1,600 calories. Call it progress? We don't either. Despite being 70 calories lighter, this plate still manages to fit in more calories than 5 McDonald?s Cheeseburgers, not to mention a day?s worth of sodium. And athough this salad is by far the worst of IHOP?s greens, the others are far from ideal: With the single exception of the Chicken Caesar Salad?ordered without chicken, that is?none of the chain?s dinner salads fall below 1,000 calories. You?d do better to play it safe and order off the Simple & Fit menu.
