The Hassen Family: They're Willing to Go With the Flow and Quiet

Hello,

I had two boys last year and 3 girls this year. Just as mentioned both sets of students have been very polite, willing to go with the flow and quiet.

We are enjoying conversating as much as possible, one seems to able to speak English and understand much better or is less shy. I try to draw out the other two also I do manage to get a few comments here and there.

Last night Friday, we had taco night they seemed to enjoy this and carmel flan for dessert. I have made fish, meatloaf, turkey chili, stir fry all from home and for breakfast bagels, toast and eggs, rice cereal and they have liked all of it. They haven?t been over eaters or snackers.

One has called home often and I spoke English with her father. Also last night we taught them Crazy Eight, and Go Fish card games, and they taught us a Chinese Card Game with the cards they brought us as a gift.

They also played Jenga with my 12 yr old. I left them alone for hours laughing, then we tried all kinds of snack food that they had been hesitant to eat before.

Mostly they will eat whatever I cook and we had a Chinese Buffett night in Raleigh at ?Hibacchi Grill? quite lovely. We also tried Italian night at ?Pulcinella in Durham? highly recommended, they got spag and meatballs and salads there seemed to enjoy it.

We only went shopping once and they have told me they do not like clothes much , which astounds me for teens. They do not wish to go to the movies or swimming at the pool which surprised me but that?s fine. We did watch ?Tangled? today a disney film.

This weekend they wanted to rest and use their computer.

They are also very polite, respectful and quiet. Just like last year I too am praising there attitudes, politness and eating everything on their plate without complaining.

We have shared several family photograhs, some dances, and tid bits of information about family life there and here.

I am enjoying it but a tad tired of the meal preps and all, I do not make them help me. Maybe I should next week and try out the cooking from their end idea.

I would like to attend the international festival where is it at?

Police: Family In Gloucester County, New Jersey Targeted By Two ...

By Mike Dougherty, Robin Rieger

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, Nj. (CBS) ? A Gloucester Township, New Jersey family was apparently targeted by two men in a home invasion robbery on Saturday night.

According to police, the suspects gagged and bound a female victim when she walked into her Jefferson Drive home in Laurel Springs shortly after 9 p.m. and found them searching for cash or jewelry. Police say they didn?t leave empty handed when told there was nothing there.

?The suspects stole the wedding ring and engagement ring of the woman they had bound up and they fled from the residence,? says Deputy Police Chief David Harkins.

Harkins says the suspects knew who they were robbing.

?They gave indications that they did know that they were employees or connected to a jewelry store. So that leads us to believe that they were targeting these people specifically.?

Harkins says the woman?s husband came home a short time later to find her tied up. Fortunately, she wasn?t hurt.

The two suspects are described as black males wearing black ski masks and dark clothing. One of the males was between 5-10 and 5-11 and
spoke with a Jamaican accent, however the accent may have been a ruse.

Anyone with information on who might be responsible is asked to call police.

London 2012 Olympics: Rise of medal-winning cycle star Lizzie Armitstead

Born in Otley, West Yorkshire, the 23-year-old took up cycling only when Team GB visited her school when she was a teenager.

Aged 15, Armitstead preferred sports like hockey, netball and football, but her PE teacher at Prince Henry's Grammar School is said to have spotted something in the teenager and invited British Cycling's Olympic Talent to come to the school.

"They set up fun and games on bikes on the school field and gave people a go," Armitstead said previously.

"They saw who they thought had potential and I was one of them," she said, but insisted: "I was rubbish. I was really bad."

Since then it has not been plain sailing, but Armitstead has enjoyed a relatively meteoric rise, although her own success seems to have come as a surprise to the now-silver medallist.

"My first race that I won, I was too scared to take my hands off the handlebars and celebrate," she is reported as saying. "I was just so shocked that I'd won."

It was clearly no lucky victory. Armitstead won a silver medal in the Scratch Race at the Junior World Track Championships in 2005, she was U23 European Scratch Race Champion in 2007 and 2008, and came second in the Points Race in 2007.

In 2008 she is said to have played a key role in helping fellow Briton Nicole Cooke win the World Championships road race in Varese, Italy, as Cooke became the first cyclist to take the World Championship and Olympic titles in the same year.

The following year, Armitstead was part of the Women's Team Pursuit which won gold at the World Track Championships in Warsaw, Poland, and at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010 she took silver in the road race, as well as bronze in the points race.

The 23-year-old has notched up other notable victories, including winning the first stage of Tour de l'Aude in May 2009, and winning the best young rider classification at the women's Tour of Italy.

In November that year she won the Track World Cup team pursuit in Manchester with Joanna Rowsell and Wendy Houvenaghel.

Cooke may have been the defending Olympic champion, but Armitstead was not afraid to voice her opinion.

In September 2011 she criticised Cooke for "riding for herself" after the World Championships road race in Copenhagen.

The pair appear to have made up since then - but Armitstead found herself up there as a big name going into this year's Games.

She announced she planned to focus on road racing at London 2012 late last year, and in June was confirmed in Team GB for her first Olympics.

Writing in a blog for London's Evening Standard, she said she was expecting the news, but was again taken aback by her own reaction.

"It felt like a big weight had been lifted off my shoulders but all along I wasn't aware it had been a weight on my shoulders, if that makes any sense."

And the weight will certainly be off her shoulders after winning Britain's first Olympic medal today.

And although she was slightly rueful at missing out on gold, she showed her usual buoyant self, saying: "I'm really, really happy. Maybe later I'll start thinking about that gold, but I'm happy with silver at the moment.

"It's something very special and it hasn't sunk in yet."

Animal trapping in spotlight in Idaho - Sun, 29 Jul 2012 PST

Amendment

Trapping is part of a proposed amendment to add the right to hunt, fish and trap into Idaho?s constitution. The measure is on the ballots in?November.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho ? The photo caused an uproar in the online community: a wolf, its leg caught in a trap, standing in a ring of bloody snow, as Nez Perce National Forest employee Josh Bransford posed with a grin in the?foreground.

Critics contended posing for the photo before killing the wolf was inhumane. Defenders said the blood came from other injuries, not the trap, which was set correctly and?legally.

In the last several months, coverage of the controversy is the most press the practice has received in Idaho. But trapping is about to hit the spotlight again, as part of a proposed amendment to add the right to hunt, fish and trap into Idaho?s?constitution.

The measure is on the ballots this November, but animal rights activists are unhappy about including trapping in the?amendment.

Idahoans Against Trapping chairman Greg Moore said his group feels trapping is an unnecessarily cruel and prolonged way of killing?animals.

?Due to the inclusion of trapping in the amendment, if it passes, then torturing wild animals to death will have been declared legal in Idaho forever,? Moore said. And if it?s protected in the constitution, potential changes to trapping-related laws may have to go through the courts, not the?Legislature.

Moore also said the constitution should be for fundamental human rights, like freedom of speech and?religion.

?Trapping does not fall into that category,? Moore?said.

Twin Falls Sen. Lee Heider, author of the Right to Hunt amendment, dismissed those concerns, saying trappers check their traps?often.

?I don?t think anybody delights in being cruel,? Heider said. ?To make an animal suffer, that?s just not something we?do.?

In Idaho, trappers are required to check traps once every 72 hours. But most check once every 24 hours, said Andy White of the Idaho Trappers?Association.

Heider also said trapping is as much a part of Idaho?s tradition as hunting and?fishing.

?The original mountain men, the original Idahoans, were much more involved in trapping, and that?s why they came out here,? Heider?said.

And the reality of trapping isn?t as inhumane as opponents say, White said. Foot hold traps aren?t designed to injure the animal, he claimed. The idea is to hold the game in place, allowing the trapper to release the animal if they decide not to?harvest.

That way, ?the animal doesn?t suffer and continue to fight the trap,? White said, adding that today?s trap designs are different than those from 50 years?ago.

Foot holds and other forms of live traps allow for valuable wildlife management, like relocating species to other areas, White?said.

Heider is confident the amendment will?pass.

?I?ve never trapped anything in my whole life,? Heider said. ?But I believe just as strongly that it should be a right that?s protected for those who?do.?

Apple Considered Investing Hundreds of Millions in Twitter

This entry needs translation. To help us and submit a translation please click here

Apple considered a large investment in Twitter reports the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

The NYT says Apple was in talks with Twitter 'in recent months' about a strategic investment.

Apple has considered an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars, one that could value Twitter at more than $10 billion, up from an $8.4 billion valuation last year, these people said. They declined to be named because the discussions were private.

There is no guarantee that the two companies, which are not in negotiations at the moment, will come to an agreement. But the earlier talks are a sign that they may form a stronger partnership amid intensifying competition from the likes of Google and Facebook.

The WSJ has a slightly different report saying that Apple held discussions with Twitter more than a year ago.

Apple Inc. held discussions with Twitter Inc. more than a year ago about taking a strategic investment in the short-messaging service, according to a person familiar with the talks. People familiar with the matter said there are no current formal investment or acquisition discussions between the companies.

You can download Twitter from the App Store for free.

(AP) ? Baffled?

If elements of Danny Boyle's three-hour opening ceremony for the London Olympics went over your head, fear not. We are here to help.

The opening ceremony production is replete with inside jokes and cultural references that many non-Brits may find baffling. The Anglophile dream tour embraces the "Slumdog Millionaire" director's complex and by turns dark and whimsical vision of life on this island nation.

Who else would have thought of dancing nurses?

So read on, all will be clear.

RING THAT BELL

What is it with Britain and bells? Boyle ordered up a 27-ton whopper from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry to ring in the games. Founded in 1570 and officially Britain's oldest manufacturing company, Whitechapel ? just a few miles from the Olympic Park ? also made London's Big Ben and Philadelphia's Liberty Bell. Boyle loved that ringing a bell to begin a performance was customary at the time of Shakespeare. The bell rung Friday will be inscribed with a line from "The Tempest," in which Caliban says "Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises."

NURSES, NURSES, EVERYWHERE

Boyle recruited real nurses working for the National Health Service to take part, a tribute to a treasured national institution that started in 1948 amid the ruins of war-devastated Britain. The state-funded NHS provides free health treatment to all Britons, and is embraced by all political parties. While grumbling about its perceived slow service is widespread ? and planned government reforms are controversial ? its egalitarian ethos is a matter of national pride. When U.S. Republicans criticized the NHS in 2009, a Twitter campaign in its defense became so popular it crashed the NHS website.

WHAT IS JERUSALEM?

Well, there's the one in the Middle East, and then there's "Jerusalem," the hymn that doubles as England's unofficial national anthem, belted out at big state occasions and sports matches alike. It's based on a poem by William Blake, which wonders whether there is truth to the legend that Jesus visited England as a young man: ("And did those feet, in ancient time; walk upon England's mountains green?") Blake ? like Boyle ? contrasts that with a bleaker nation of industrialized "dark Satanic mills," before calling - "Bring me my chariot of fire!" for a new heaven to be built "in England's green and pleasant land."

SPEAKING OF SATANIC MILLS

Britain was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, when transformations in agriculture, transportation and technology brutally reshaped society between 1760 and 1850. Spinning technology led to the creation of textile factories, which was followed by James Watt's invention of the steam engine, and improved coal mining techniques that powered railroads and ships. The advances of the industrial revolution also led to abuses, which sparked riots by workers and eventually spurred the creation of modern organized labor, as well as overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in British cities that triggered outbreaks of cholera and typhoid.

AMAZING ENGINEERS

All that industry made Britain an innovation powerhouse ? and Boyle celebrates its pioneers, past and present. He has drawn inspiration from two Britons whose names many don't know, but whose legacy surrounds us every day ? Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Tim Berners-Lee. Brunel was the pioneering Victorian engineer who helped knit Britain together with an infrastructure of iron bridges and railways. He died in 1859 but many of his creations ? including the first tunnel under the River Thames ? are still in use. Computer scientist Berners-Lee is the inventor of the World Wide Web, the infrastructure of the Internet, which is still transforming the way we communicate and the way we live.

TELEVISION GENERATION

Ask Britons from 6 to 60 about their favorite TV show and one answer will probably dominate: "Doctor Who." The series about a space-hopping Time Lord first aired in 1963; so far 11 actors have played its lead character, an enigmatic alien known only as "The Doctor." The show fuses science fiction thrills with humanism and whimsy and is vital suppertime viewing for millions. Its pulsating electronic theme music is instantly recognizable to sci-fi geeks everywhere.

And Boyle would not be reflecting modern-day Britain without a reference to long-running and hugely popular soap operas like "Coronation Street" and "EastEnders." Unlike soaps in many countries, which are set among the wealthy and glamorous, British soaps have gritty working-class backdrops. One British critic once noted that "American soaps are about watching beautiful people suffer. We like to watch ugly people suffer."

CHILDREN'S CLASSICS

From Britain's rich literary tradition, Boyle focuses on its cornucopia of children's classics. British writers gave the world heroes like Peter Pan, Mary Poppins and Harry Potter ? and even-more-memorable villains, from Captain Hook to Cruella de Vil to Voldemort. Perfect material for Boyle, who is drawn to both darkness and light, and directed warm but unsentimental depictions of childhood in the movies "Millions" and "Slumdog Millionaire."

BLOWING BUBBLES?

Despite the British reputation for reserve, get Brits in a crowd ? especially at a sporting event ? and they love to sing. So no ceremony would be complete without a good old-fashioned sing-along. "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" is the anthem of West Ham United football club, but known to almost everyone. It's also an Olympic in-joke: West Ham, an east London team, is bidding to move into the Olympic Stadium once the games are over.

GREAT MOMENTS IN BRITISH WEATHER

Of course Britain's weather HAD to figure in a show about an island nation, with references to BBC radio's daily institution "The Shipping Forecast." Though it provides crucial data for mariners, the forecast is admired for its melodic and soothing chant four times a day. It's a reminder that even in the jet age, Britain is an island nation where much depends on the movement of the sea.

Boyle also pokes fun, reminding the audience of the moment when BBC weatherman Michael Fish assured his audience that a hurricane would bypass Britain's shores. Alas, it did not. The Great Storm of 1987 was the most severe to hit the nation for centuries.

"Modern Family" stars sue over contracts

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The cast of the award-winning TV show "Modern Family" sued the comedy's production company, 20th Century Fox Television, on Tuesday for violating their work contracts under California Law in a move seen as a bid for higher pay.

The shows' stars, including Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell, were named in the lawsuit filed in state court in Los Angeles in a legal move to void their current contracts.

The complaint was posted on celebrity websites including TheWrap.com, which said the show's other main star, Ed O'Neill, later joined the lawsuit in solidarity with his co-stars.

"'Modern Family' has been a breakout critical and financial success. That success, however, has been built upon a collection of illegal contracts," the lawsuit said.

A spokeswoman for 20th Century Fox had no immediate comment on the lawsuit, but confirmed that "a table read was canceled today," which would have marked the cast's return to production in preparation for a fourth season starting in September.

The complaint said the current contracts for Ferguson, Bowen, Burrell and Stonestreet violated a California law that limits personal service contracts to no longer than seven years. After starting in January 2009, most of actors' deals were set to run until June 2016, making them illegal, the lawsuit said.

In addition, the actors were required to perform publicity year-round and were allowed a maximum pay increase of 4 percent per episode annually.

The actors were offered $150,000 per episode and a $50,000 bonus per episode for the upcoming fourth season, and $200,000 for the fifth season, a person familiar with the negotiations told TheWrap.com, but those figures could not be confirmed.

Last week, "Modern Family" was nominated for 14 Emmy Awards, including best TV comedy, and has been a major hit for the ABC TV network. But in recent weeks, the actors have been locked in contract talks, and Tuesday's legal filing was widely seen as a negotiation tactic, according to industry publications.

Little Praised Fields in Industrial Maintenance

Industrial maintenance is a field of work where repairs are done to mechanical equipment in an industrialized setting (i.e. a factory or a plant). Due to the high demand being placed on industrialized products and services, including electricity, electronic gadgets and appliances, different types of mechanical technicians, and so on, the outlook for industrial workers is only increasing as time goes by. The very hands-on atmosphere in which maintenance workers turn their A+ training into real world experiences is very appealing to many. Most gravitate towards the most popular jobs (electrician and mechanic) in the field. However, it is the ones that aren?t so high on everyone?s list that are truly integral jobs that allow plants and factories to function.

Industrial hydraulics is a field of maintenance that deals mostly with valves. Many machines are powered partly by flow and pressure from water or some other type of fluid. Industrial hydraulic workers are able to maintain the flow that is needed in order to power the machinery. They make sure lines and valves are opening and flowing correctly and are also able to change the flow depending upon the task that is being carried out by the machinery. Hydraulic workers learn how to repair the hydraulic engines they work with and how to fix any problems with water resistance or any other components of the machinery, such as the filters.

Robotics is one of the areas increasing at the fastest pace in the industrial maintenance field because of the large amount of technical work that is required in order to obtain a position. In robotics, some type of main computer controls various other electronic instruments so that they can perform specific functions. If something goes wrong with the main component, it causes the entire facility to malfunction, wreaking havoc among the plant. Most people know the feeling of being in the office when the internet server or management system fails. It is not a good thing, as it is usually a crucial part in completing the work for the day. Robotics majors learn how to fix and troubleshoot the problems that are presented with these main components. This helps to ensure that everyone?s day runs as smoothly as possible.

In the field of industrial maintenance, there are jobs that are not given enough credit. The extremely experienced technical worker who fixes the server in the office is usually just hassled the entire time he or she is there. Hydraulic specialists are often under fire from co-workers because their machinery is the backbone of a plant, and if it doesn?t function right, the rest of the plant is put on hold. These jobs, while they receive tremendous amounts of scrutiny from others, are extremely important in the daily operations that occur. The specialists who perform these jobs have been through rigorous course work and are extremely skilled. Without them, many businesses would be lost.

If you?re thinking of starting a new career and want training in industrial maintenance Alabama has plenty of programs to choose from. To learn more about one such practical, skill-based program, visit http://atn.org.

Is It Time for a New Payroll System? - Hagel and Company

July 24th, 2012 by Hagel and Company

As a busy payroll manager, it is critical to have an easy, flexible solution that helps you process payroll accurately and quickly, every time. Your payroll solution should help you stay up to date with changing compliance requirements and accurately manage taxes. It is also important to keep your employees happy by providing secure access to payroll information and offering a variety of pay options.

What type of payroll system is used at your company? Is it paper-based? Do you run a legacy system or utilize payroll capabilities in your small business accounting solution? When was your system implemented or updated?

In today?s business climate, companies are facing a variety of budgetary and regulatory constraints that may not have existed when your payroll system was first put in place. Here are five signs it may be time for a new payroll system:

  1. Old system, bigger company. If your company has grown, chances are you?ve outgrown your old payroll system. Your system should be able to accommodate demanding requirements including a wide range of earning types, including base pay, premium pay, and tax only. Make sure you can meet the unique needs of each employee by offering a variety of pay options such as unlimited direct deposit accounts or PayCards.
  2. Compliance issues. Many government agencies are stepping up the enforcement of employment laws and issuing fines for violations. Can your payroll system handle the reporting requirements of the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Equal Pay Act? Will you be able stay compliant with new regulations like the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA)?
  3. Taxes and filing complications. Managing taxes is probably the most difficult part of the payroll process. Are you confident that your system is accurate and keeping your company up to date with payments? From federal and state tax tables to FICA wages and tax withholding, if your payroll taxes are prone to errors, your company can face steep fines and penalties for mistakes.
  4. Payroll stands alone. If your payroll system isn?t integrated with HR, time and attendance, or accounting systems, it?s time for a change. An integrated system eliminates duplicate data entry, simplifies reporting, and automatically links benefit plans in HR to deductions in payroll.
  5. Employees aren?t connected. HR and payroll managers are being asked to increase employee satisfaction whenever possible. Does your payroll system have self service capabilities? Using a self service portal, employees can view and print pay stubs, W-2s and authorize W-4 form changes. Investing in self service technology is an investment in your employees.

An industry-leading, customizable HRMS solution, Sage HRMS Payroll helps companies maximize their Return On Employee Investment (ROEI)?, as well as optimize their HR and payroll business processes. With Sage HRMS Payroll, you can successfully meet and respond to the HR and payroll management challenges you face every day. In addition to automating and streamlining your day-to-day HR and payroll business processes, Sage HRMS Payroll provides you with the tools and critical analytical workforce information your organization needs to drive business objectives, so you can focus on the business asset that is most vital to your company?your employees.

Ways To Make The Internet Work For Your Business | It is imperative ...

It is imperative in modern times to use Internet marketing effectively. Not bothering to make and follow a plan can keep you from reaching your full potential online. Following are some great online marketing tips and techniques.

Consider offering an e-freebie that represents your business or service well, and put it out there where it can reach the masses. If you are offering a free e-book, the book should be submitted to the websites that offer e-books for free. Various websites are available that provide articles, free items, e-zines and e-books, and you can submit your item to a number of these sites.

Adopt a positive and enthusiastic tone to get people interested in your products or services. Demonstrate to prospective clients how much you personally enjoy the products you sell, and prove that you value your business. That emotion will be contagious and you will convince those who visit your site to love the product too. This eventually will equate to increased sales and profits.

Email can be a great way to target your marketing to specific groups of customers. Not only does it make your site feel a lot more exclusive to visitors, but it also allows you to obtain your visitors' email addresses. Have a contest or give away something for free in exchange for their email address, as you can use this down the road to market to them. A customer will provide their email if they get something in return for it.

Providing proof to back up claims is very important. For instance, if you say your product works great, people may or may not believe you. However, if you make a video showing how effective the product functions, you will be far more convincing. This is a great illustration of why you should sell products you have actually used whenever possible.

Be sure to incorporate the use of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites in your Internet marketing strategy. News media, such as social websites, allow you to keep up-to-date and in constant communication with all your site's visitors, and simple and quick when trying to keep them informed about any promotions. Although, you should not advertise too often as this can push your customers away. Instead, be sure to provide your readers with posts that are helpful and insightful.

Never resort to spamming your prospective and existing customers in the hopes of making a sale. Posting hundreds of links on random sites and blogs will not draw any traffic. When you fail to add personal touches to your advertising people recognize this and are less likely to give your business.

Give people a limited time offer. This could mean providing free shipping or free gift wrapping for any purchases made prior to a given date. Make sure that you highlight the end date of the offer to create a feeling of urgency.

Now that you know how to use Internet marketing, you can incorporate these tips to ensure your business is a success. Use this knowledge to help boost your profits, increase your visibility, and attract new clients!

If you want to become expert on this field, you should visit this link to find out more about it. This post will reveal helpful information about Smash It.

CPS Energy solar partnership promises power, new S.A. jobs

by KENS 5 staff

kens5.com

Posted on July 23, 2012 at 4:10 PM

Updated today at 6:15 PM

A solar energy venture between CPS Energy and OCI Solar Power will bring increased energy capacity and hundreds of new jobs to San Antonio, CPS announced Monday afternoon.

The partnership will be able to generate 400 megawatts of solar energy and also will prompt the construction of several manufacturing facilities to produce solar panel components, creating 805 jobs in San Antonio.

?This will power about 70,000 homes at its peak when all the solar powers are put in and up and working,? said CPS president and CEO Doyle Beneby.
?
The company called it a "first-of-its kind, manufacturing-to-generation contract." The San Antonio project is the largest in the nation among municipal utilities and would make Texas a top-five U.S. solar-producing state.

The 400 megawatts of energy would be enough to power nearly 70,000 local homes, which is about 10 percent of San Antonio's energy consumers.

?

?We will begin to see things unfold in the next few months. The duration of the project is about 4 years, so we expect after 4 years we will have the 800 jobs, or perhaps even more,? said Beneby.

?This is a great foothold in the new energy economy for San Antonio that?s just going to have a tremendous economic benefit all around,? said Mayor Julian Castro.

The company listed the potential benefits of the deal:

- New corporate headquarters in San Antonio;
- An estimated $100 million high-tech U.S. manufacturing operation in south San Antonio;
- More than 800 professional and technical jobs with an annual payroll of nearly $40 million, 75 percent of which will be in the renewable energy sector;
- $700 million in annual economic impact;
- $1 billion in construction investment; and,
- A 25-year power purchase agreement.
????????
The deal marks the first Texas venture for OCI Solar Power. The solar agreement is estimated to have a projected annual economic impact of $700 million for Greater San Antonio, the company said. The 800 new jobs doesn?t account for the many construction jobs needed to build the manufacturing facilities.

The definition of an antique in the UK is any item that is 100 years old or more (in other countries this definition can be different and elsewhere items are often described as antique when they are only 50 years old or more). But whatever the correct definition we all understand that antiques are old, and this very fact means that they can be very delicate items. Conversely they can also be very solid, well-built items of a much higher quality than similar items produced in more recent times. Depending on their age, rarity, provenance and condition they can be very valuable items so if you are planning to place them in long-term storage then you will want to be sure of preserving their condition and hence value. Long-term storage in a self-storage unit may not be the perfect location for your precious antiques but sometimes you simply have no choice -- you may be relocating abroad for a period of time, moving into rented, furnished accommodation or having your home refurbished. If you take special care of your antiques during the packing, transporting and storage then there is no reason why they will not survive the ordeal unscathed. To ensure your precious antiques remain in good condition follow these simple guidelines: 1. Always use acid-free tissue paper when wrapping delicate items to prevent chemicals in the wrapping materials from damaging the items due to prolonged contact. 2. Use a protective outer layer such as thick cloth, bubble wrap or cardboard to protect from bumps and knocks. 3. Clean all items before storing but ensure no cleaning product residue remains. Every item should then be covered to keep out the dust particles that will settle over time. 4. Preserve leather with a suitable leather protector that will keep moisture out. 5. Treat wooden items with a suitable wood conditioner that will protect against moisture. 6. Dismantle heavy items, wherever possible, to prevent undue stress on the joints and legs then wrap and store each part separately. 7. Very fragile items such as glass and china should be well wrapped and then stored in a rigid container for added protection. 8. Rugs and other fabric items should be protected with layers of acid-free tissue paper and cotton dust sheets. Avoid folding them but if they cannot be laid flat then roll them. 9. Unglazed paintings should be covered with layers of acid-free tissue paper then protected with cardboard or foam padding for very valuable items. 10. Glazed paintings should have the glass covered with strips of masking tape (to protect the painting underneath from damage should the glass break) then wrapped in bubble wrap and cardboard. 11. Antique silver will always be prone to tarnishing but this is not permanent damage and the items can easily be polished back to their former glory once removed from storage. But the amount of tarnishing can be reduced by minimising contact with air so wrap each silver item individually and tightly in cotton cloth followed by a non-absorbent outer layer such as bubble wrap. Because the moisture in the air can cause damage to all types of materials, particularly wood, fabric, metal and leather, minimising the amount of moisture in the air will preserve your antiques in good condition for longer. If yourself storage unit is not climate controlled then invest in a dehumidifier for additional protection of your precious items whilst in self-storage.
